Join us for a lecture from Barbara Oberlander about Dr. Mary Walker in celebration of Women's History Month.
In honor of Women's History Month, come learn more from Dr. Barbara Oberlander about the fascinating life of Mary Edwards Walker, the only woman to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Dr. Mary Edwards Walker (1832–1919) was a groundbreaking American surgeon, women's rights activist, abolitionist, and lecturer, known as the first female U.S. Army surgeon and the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor (later restored). Raised by progressive parents who encouraged female education, she graduated from Syracuse Medical College in 1855, defying norms by wearing trousers, even at her wedding. During the Civil War, she served the Union Army, was captured as a spy, and later championed dress reform and women's suffrage, becoming a symbol of nonconformity and equality.
Dr. Oberlander was a Santa Fe College History professor for 30 years. She has given over 100 public presentations on outstanding women, with a special focus on First Ladies.
