Relic Quest
Make Your Own Fossils
Saturday, July 11
3:00pm - 4:00pm
Archer Branch
Meeting RoomExplore fossil types and make your own "dinosaur fossils" using salt dough and model dinosaur bones. Ages 9 and up, younger children may need parental assistance.
There are several types of fossils, but we'll look at two: molds and casts. Mold fossils are hollow impressions like footprints or where the remains dissolved and left an impression in sediment that turned to rock. Cast fossils are when minerals get deposited into molds and hardened into a 3D model. Using salt dough, you will make mold fossils of model dinosaur bones and/or cast fossils of animal tracks. Supplies provided.
Your fossils should be sealed after drying at least overnight. You can leave them for us to spray seal and pick them up the following week or take them home to seal with Mod Podge or spray shellac on your own.
