Playback Theater Improv for Seniors

Playback is a type of improvised drama wherein the actors hear a teller’s story and “playback” that story for the teller. Playback Theater is led by Dr. Karelisa Hartigan, retired UF professor.

Playback is a type of improvised drama wherein the actors hear a teller’s story and “playback” that story for the teller. Unlike improv wherein actors create the dialogue and scene themselves, or use creative “games” to build a scene, in Playback the actors’ role is to listen and retell the story that has been told. They often use specific “form” to retell the story; at other times they create a mini-drama from that story. It is a type of social drama based on listening to and honoring the teller’s words.

This class will work on learning the Playback forms and carefully listening to a teller’s story.

Instructor: Karelisa Hartigan, retired from UF professor of Classics, has been doing various types of improv for about 20 years. She has taken classes with Bay Area Theater Sports and the Playback training program with Jonathan Fox, inventor of Playback.  She currently teaches 2 classes in improv at the Elder Care Senior Center and leads an improv program for the VA for the rehabilitation of formerly homeless or incarcerated veterans.
